What is Binge Eating & Disordered Eating?

Binge Eating   Much of our eating takes place out of our awareness…

“Losing weight and getting healthy isn’t just changing your eating habits, it’s about changing your lifestyle which includes your mental health, exercise and eating habits.”

Disordered eating is a potential problem for everyone – it crosses all boundaries and groups including all socioeconomic classes, age and gender.

A couple of facts:

66% of Americans are currently overweight or obese (Centers for Disease Control (CDC))

$33 Billion is spent each year on diet programs or products

Roughly 112,000 U.S. Deaths linked to obesity (JAMA, 2005)

Binge Eating

  Things to keep in mind:

  • The capitalistic nature of the food industry (larger portions, super sizing, salt, sugar and fat causes you to want to eat more)

  • Emotional Eating – much of why we eat is based on our underlying emotional state (anxiety, depression, self esteem) that is not recognized.

  • Self Control Difficulties – We all have a reward system in our brains that may cause people to act out in regards to addictions, behaviors or eating. The result is difficulty exerting self control.

Treatment of binge eating includes a comprehensive understanding of one’s:

  • Mental Health (mood, stress , sleep)
  • Addiction Background (self control difficulties)
  • Nutritional History
  • Medical History
  • Family History
  • Physical exercise

It’s much more complex than the old saying “Just eat less and move more”.
